The Bom Petisco Peniche Pro, the fifth and final leg of the MEO Surf League, was once again accompanied by an environmental initiative.
More than 170 children from 7 schools in the municipality of Peniche were involved, together with the sustainability partner of the MEO Surf League, the Jerónimo Martins Group.
The initiative included a lecture on the importance of protecting the oceans and practical ways in which young people can contribute. The initiative was coordinated by Sónia Sousa Ell, a specialist in marine ecosystem sustainability issues. Afterwards, the children took part in a beach clean-up with local volunteers, with the aim of collecting waste on the beaches of Peniche.
For Francisco Rodrigues, president of the National Association of Surfers, “the importance of maintaining these actions during the phases should not be underestimated. Since we started these initiatives, in 2018, we have already affected three thousand children and volunteers. importance of protecting the oceans, and in practical ways they can contribute. This goes beyond the importance of beach clean-ups: in the first year alone, we collected a tonne of waste from beaches from north to south of the country.”
