Carlos Carvalhal is the new coach of Celta Vigo

Portuguese Carlos Carvalhal is the new coach of football team Celta Vigo and succeeds Argentinian Eduardo Coudet, who has signed a contract until 2024, the Spanish club announced on its official website on Wednesday.

Carlos Carvalhal will be Celta’s coach until June 2024, following the agreement reached with the club in recent hours. The Portuguese coach arrives at the ‘azul-celeste’ team, backed by extensive experience and with a career that is marked by notable successes”, reads the note published by the Galician club.

The 56-year-old will gain his first experience with Spanish football and will be “immediately put in charge of the team”.

Carvalhal, who had been without a club since early October when he left Al Wahda from the United Arab Emirates, is set to ‘catch up’ to Celta Vigo as the team occupies 16th place in the Spanish League, just one point higher in the relegation zone.

This will be the former centre-back’s fifth experience as a coach outside of Portugal, after spells in England (Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City), Turkey (Besiktas and Istanbul BB), Greece (Asteras Tripoli) and the Emirates.

In Portugal, Carvalhal won the Portuguese Cup with Sporting de Braga, in 2020/21, in his second stint with the Minho club, having previously commanded Rio Ave, Sporting, Marítimo, Vitória de Setúbal, Beira-Mar, Belenenses , Leixões, Desportivos das Aves, Vizela, Freamunde and Sporting de Espinho.

At Celta, the Portuguese coach will meet his compatriot Gonçalo Paciência, a striker who arrived in Vigo this season and played eight games and scored one goal in the Spanish League.

The debut of Carvalhal is scheduled for Saturday, with the reception for Osasuna.

Hours earlier, the Galician crest had announced the departure of Argentinian Eduardo Coudet, who had later been with the club since November 2020.
