Fernando Santos: Tax authorities got “80% of salaries paid by the FPF”

The Portuguese football coach, Fernando Santos, accused the Tax Office (AT) of retaining 80% of the income obtained in 2016 and 2017 through the contract signed with the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).

In an interview with the TV channel Sport TV, Fernando Santos explained the tax situation in which he is involved, saying that he heard “a lot of lies” regarding this case, which concerns a model contract for the provision of services between the FPF and the incorporated company, FERMACOSA, rather than between a company and a person.

“AT said it was legal, but understood that the service contract should not be between two companies, but between FPF and Fernando Santos. The result of this disagreement is that a company pays IRC [Imposto sobre o Rendimento das Pessoas Coletivas] and if you want to withdraw this money, you will pay an additional 28% IRS (Imposto sobre o Inrenmento das Pessoas Singulares). IRC and I paid the IRS. Therefore, 80% of the salaries paid by the FPF are owned by the AT,” he added.

The national coach continued: “I have never been accused of tax fraud. They just said there was a disagreement. I have appealed, it does not seem legitimate to me to pay 80% tax to get a refund”.

“Of course I’m going to sue the AT. I’ve challenged it in the administrative courts and this week I’m going to do it in the Supreme Court. I’m still convinced I’m right. FERMACOSA will receive the IRC. I have 80% there and I cannot accept that,” Fernando Santos said in the interview.

With regard to his company, FERMACOSA, the coach of the “quinas” team recalled that, besides football, he always had other activities, with “legal companies that paid all their taxes in full”, and this was “built in a clear and unambiguous , controlled and fully transparent”, not being a “fictitious” company.
