Portuguese Carlos Queiroz will return to Iran to command that country’s national team until the end of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, state news agency IRNA announced on Wednesday.
Negotiations between the Football Federation of Iran (FFIRI) and Queiroz “finally came to a conclusion” and “a contract was signed between the two sides,” the news reads, adding that The Portuguese arrives in Tehran this weekend to start his career in the national team until the end of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Iran national football team, like Portugal, will participate in the final stages of the World Cup in December as part of Group B, which also includes England, the United States and Wales.
Last week, the IRIFF elected a new president for a four-year term, with Mehdi Taj fulfilling a promise to return Queiroz to the national team.
Carlos Queiroz, former Portuguese coach and World Under-20 Champion in 1989 and 1991, also with the Portuguese teams of that level, already led the teams of the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Colombia, Iran (between 2011 and 2019) and Egypt , which he left in April, after seven months of work and after failing to qualify for the world championship.
In addition to Real Madrid (2003-2004), Queiroz was Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Manchester United (2002-2003 and 2004-2008) and also coached Sporting (1993-1996).
