FC Porto striker Mehdi Taremi was included on Monday in the list of 25 called up by the Iranian team, the Portuguese Carlos Queiroz, for the 2022 World Cup, which starts on Sunday in Qatar.
One day later than expected, due to alleged technical problems that prevented the press conference, Queiroz announced the 25th squad through the Iranian federation website on the Internet.
Following the postponement of the call-up, rumors surfaced that the Portuguese coach was being pressured to leave out Sardar Azmoun, who has been supporting the protests in Iran, but the Bayer Leverkusen striker is on the list.
In Iran’s 25-man squad there are four goalkeepers, including Alireza Beiranvand, who went through Boavista, Amir Abedzadeh, formerly Marítimo, and Payam Niazmand, on loan from Portimonense to Sepahan, coached by the Portuguese José Morais.
In the World Cup in Qatar, which takes place from Sunday to December 18, Iran is in Group B, along with England, Wales and the United States.
Iran will be in a World Cup for the sixth time, the third in a row, and, in Qatar, they will try to go to the group stage for the first time.
