Liverpool midfielder Fábio Carvalho “decided to give up representing” the Portugal under-21 team, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) reported on Monday, clarifying that the player’s decision was communicated through “some text messages”.
“Fábio Carvalho has informed the Portuguese Football Federation through some text messages that he does not intend to continue representing Portugal at the under-21 level,” read on the official website of the FPF.
That indicates the organization “the player’s decision was announced after the call-up for the pre-season matches was announced” with the Czech Republic and Japan.
The 20-year-old footballer from Liverpool was part of Rui Jorge’s 23-man squad, but did not show up for the training camp in Lagos, according to the FPF.
The games against the Czech Republic and Japan, in preparation for the Under-21 Championship in 2023, are scheduled for November 18 and 22 respectively, both played at Estádio Municipal de Portimão, starting at 7:15 p.m.
Portugal is included in Group A of the final phase of the European Championship, with hosts Georgia (June 21), the Netherlands (24) and Belgium (27) as opponents. The top two teams from each of the four groups advance to the quarter-finals.
