The Qatari authorities and FIFA announced on Friday a ban on the sale of beer in and around stadiums during the World Cup in a statement published just two days before the start of the competition.
“After discussions between the country’s authorities and FIFA, the decision was made to concentrate the sale of alcoholic beverages at the FIFA Fan Fest, at meeting points for other fans and at places set up for the activity, eliminating points sale of alcoholic beverages. beer on the perimeter of the World Cup stadiums”, can be read in the note, which does not explain the reasons that led to this decision.
Qatar had already demanded that FIFA stop selling beer in the stadiums where the World Cup matches are held. The request came from the royal family of Qatar.
In the country, alcohol consumption is very restricted and the drink can only be consumed in some hotels in the capital.
During the World Cup, these regulations were relaxed, but alcohol is still not sold in supermarkets and the prices of drinks can reach very high values: a liter of beer can cost more than 13 euros.
The 2022 World Cup will be played between Sunday and December 18, with the Portuguese team classified and drawn in Group H, with Uruguay, Ghana and South Korea.
