“It’s the Portuguese way, one more to suffer. If everyone is like that and we win, it’s fine”

The words are from those who have been on the field, but those who have not stepped on the grass will have felt the same. After the Portuguese victory over Ghana, 3-2, in a game in which the team conceded two goals shortly after scoring, João Félix admitted that it was another “Portuguese” game.

Speaking to Portuguese television from Doha, the striker -author of the second Portuguese goal- admitted that the team ended up complicating the game, but what is important is the final result.

“It is the Portuguese way, one more to suffer. But if everyone is like that and we win, everything is fine”, acknowledged Félix, who did not fail to point out that Fernando Santos had already warned the team. “We are the ones who prepare to concede goals,” he stressed, “we are the ones who give them opportunities and if we avoid these details, we are a team that barely concedes goals and we hardly lose.”

In the analysis of the game, the striker pointed out that in the first part – which ended tied at zero – the Ghanaians “were much more organized, with more enthusiasm and they fell far behind”.

“When it’s like this, against a fast, aggressive and fighting team, it’s hard to get into their area. We still had a few occasions where we could have done it. [golo]We didn’t do it, but we controlled the game,” he said. In the second half, the team ended up betting on patience – “because with patience they unbalance a little more and open up spaces for us to attack” – and they were happy.” Then unfortunately they scored a goal out of nowhere and we had to go back there , we did it very well”, he also pointed out.

In what was his first game in a World Cup finals, Félix admitted that “scoring a goal right away is something we dreamed of since we were little.”

“It was terrifying, one of the best moments of my career so far. It’s for the group, the friends and the family, it’s for them that I play,” added the striker, who pointed out that “the first step” on the Portuguese path “was taking”.

“It was very important to win, it gives us morale and confidence for the games that we see there. And more tranquility, which is necessary in these competitions, ends up always having nervousness. It gives us peace of mind for the next two games”, against Uruguay and Korea From the south.
