The teams from Argentina and Poland qualified this Wednesday for the round of 16 of the World Cup in first and second place in Group C, respectively. The Argentines beat the Poles 2-0 this afternoon, while Mexico beat Saudi Arabia, but 2-1.
Despite the fact that this combination of results equaled Poland and Mexico -with four-, the goal difference of the Poles (zero) was higher than that of the Mexicans (-1), who thus finished in third place.
The goals that gave Argentina victory in the group were scored by Mac Allister (46′) and Álvarez (67′). In the first half, Szczesny saved a Lionel Messi penalty.
The Mexicans -who thus stayed on the road- scored through Henry Martin (47′) and Luís Chavez (52′), but Aldawsari’s late goal (90+5′) sealed the game.
Thus, in the round of 16, Argentina will play against Australia, while Poland will face the French team.
In last place in Group C was Saudi Arabia, with three surprising points won against Argentina in the first round.
