The court also imposed restrictions on his freedom of movement for a period of two years and a fine of 2.5 million rubles (about 38,900 euros). Ziyavudin Magomedov was also stripped of awards he had received in the past, such as the Order of Friendship and the Order of Honour, according to the Interfax news agency.
The 54-year-old defendant will be placed in a maximum security prison. Magomedov made most of his fortune under the presidency of Dmitry Medvedev through the Summa company, which was responsible for executing major projects such as the construction of the stadium in Kaliningrad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
He was arrested later that year, along with his older brother, also charged with fraud and criminal association, though he has consistently denied the charges.
Kaliningrad’s stadium, called Arena Baltika, has become a source of concern for World Cup organizers since its inception due to construction delays. In 2017, several employees were arrested for irregularities during construction work.
