Next year’s Chinese Grand Prix has been cancelled, Formula 1 announced on Friday. For the fourth consecutive year, the race has been canceled due to the covid-19 pandemic. This cancellation could be good news for Portugal, which could host another race.
According to F1 commentator João Carlos Costa, Portimão could replace China, something that will be discussed and likely to be announced on December 9, on the occasion of the FIA World Council. The race is scheduled for the weekend of April 14-16.
“Formula 1, after consultation with the promoter and relevant authorities, can confirm that the Chinese Grand Prix will not take place in 2023 due to the ongoing difficulties posed by the COVID-19 situation.”says in a statement published on the official website, adding that alternatives are being studied to fill the vacancy on the calendar
China experienced outbreaks in several parts of the country in November against which it applied very restrictive lockdown measures.
Dissatisfaction with the measures led to protests in several cities across the country last weekend.
