Morocco beats Canada and is in eighth place 36 years later

The Moroccan national team is in the round of 16 of a World Cup for the second time in history, after beating Canada 2-1 in the last round of Group F.

Previously, Morocco only managed to get into the top 16 teams of the competition in 1986. Just like 36 years ago, the North African team also won the group it played in.

At the start of the game, the accounts for qualifying were still open and Morocco knew that winning would always get them closer to one of the top two places in the group, as the other two teams (Croatia and Belgium) faced each other in the other group game. On the other hand, Canada entered the field already eliminated.

The advantage came early on, as early as 4 minutes into the game, through Hakim Ziyech, who took advantage of a goalkeeper error to score 1-0 in what was the African team’s fastest goal in a World Cup.

Still in the first half, Youssef En-Nesyri extended the result, in the 23rd minute, to 2-0, in a beautiful action, which started with the help of Hakimi. But in the 40th minute, Moroccan centre-back Nayef Aguerd made a mistake and scored an own goal to make it 2–1. It was Morocco’s first goal at the World Cup to date. At the start of the last round, only the Moroccans, Brazil and Poland (who lost 2-0 to Argentina) had not conceded a goal in the competition.

During the match, Morocco was always on top, but already in the last stretch Canada pushed through and tried to equalize, but without result. Thus, and with the tie between Croatia and Belgium, Morocco moved into first place in the group. In the eighth finals, they will compete against the number two in group E, led by Spain, who will play from 7 p.m.
