Sporting beat ‘secondary’ Farense on debut in the League Cup

Sporting won the 2022/2023 edition of the League Cup in football this Wednesday by beating the reception of the ‘secondary’ Farense 6-0 in the opening game of Group B.

At Estádio José Alvalade, the Lions began to defend the trophy they had won in the past two seasons, and also in 2018/19 and 2017/18, building up a defeat with Paulinho’s double (20 and 22 minutes) and goals from Marcus Edwards (39), Pedro Gonçalves (48), Arthur Gomes (75) and Mateus Fernandes, from the penalty spot (84).

With this result, Sporting is leading Group B of the League Cup with three points. This Thursday at 5:00 PM, Marítimo receives Rio Ave, ending this first round of the group.

With Franco Israel in goal, Marsà in defense and Essugo in midfield, being Sporting’s novelties for this game against Farense, Rúben Amorim’s forwards got into the game better and had four scoring chances in the first 10 minutes, but Francisco Trincao, twice, Nuno Santos and Paulinho failed to beat goalkeeper Ricardo Velho.

At a distance, Farense, playing in green (Sporting wore white), tried to balance the forces and face the “lions”, but “forgot” to hit markers in the defensive sector and lost everything in two simple minutes.

Sporting’s attacking ‘carousel’ eventually put a dent in a Farense who didn’t give up on his usual style of play and Paulinho scored two goals in as many minutes.

In the first, Marsà opened on the left for Nuno Santos who launched Trincão. The latter centered for Paulinho to finish.

In the second, Farense lost the ball on the restart, Marcus Edwards tried his luck, Ricardo Velho defended forward and Paulinho did not forgive in the rebound.

The difference in arguments between one team from the II Liga and another from the first was notorious and, despite Farense’s first shot in the 33rd minute, through Jhon Velásquez, who shot wide of the goal defended by Franco Israel, Sporting did not disarm and kept his eyes on the Algarve goal.

It came naturally that Alvalade’s team took the 3-0 lead in the 39th minute with a shot from Marcus Edwards, after an assist from Pedro Porro.

Newcomers Sotiris from Sporting and Gonçalo Silva from Farense accelerated and Pedro Gonçalves made it 4-0 after a cross from Pedro Porro in the 48th minute.

Despite being thrashed, Vasco Faísca’s men did not shy away from the ground, they kept playing openly, looking for the goal and tactically matching Sporting, who found solutions to build up offensive plays.

Jovane Cabral, who had replaced Trincão, was close to 5-0 in the 74th minute, and although he even had room to do better, he got carried away with fear and shot wide.

This goal finally came in the next action when Pedro Porro launched Paulinho, on the right, in the 75th minute, who served Arthur for 5-0.

On 84 minutes young Mateus Fernandes, aged 18, would seal the result with a penalty, having been fouled by Vítor Gonçalves and referee Algarvio Nuno Almeida announcing the maximum penalty.
