Roglic, 32, won the last three editions of the Vuelta and was second in the race, 01.26 minutes behind Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl).
The early retirement of the Jumbo-Visma leader comes a day after he fell in Tomares at the end of the 16th stage when he tried to gain time for the race leader.
The Slovenian managed to ‘cut’ the difference with the Belgian in eight seconds, but the fall he suffered in the last 100 meters of the stage, when he attacked the ‘sprint’, injured his elbow and right knee.
Roglic had already withdrawn from the Tour de France this year, before the start of the 15th stage, to recover from an injury from a fall 10 times before.
The ‘nightmare’ of ‘Rogla’ in the ‘great Tours’ continues, after he lost the Tour in 2020 in the time trial of the penultimate day of compatriot Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates) and also had the French race after a fall last year. gave up.
With the retirement of Roglic, Evenepoel starts today’s 17th round, between Aracena and Monasterio de Tentudía (162.3 kilometers), with a lead of 02.01 minutes on the now second place Spaniard Enric Mas (Movistar).
The Portuguese João Almeida (UAE Emirates) also climbs one position, to sixth place, seven minutes behind the Belgian, while his Spanish colleague Juan Ayuso is now third in the general classification, at 4:49 am.
