Portuguese fan was detained during Portugal-Switzerland for inappropriate behaviour

A Portuguese national was arrested in Qatar on Tuesday during the Portugal-Switzerland match, which ended with a Portuguese victory (6-1) and the national team’s respective passage to the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.

The fan led a cheering squad to support the team on Thursdays when it all happened. According to the reports of some attendees, the Portuguese man made an obscene gesture towards the police forces present in the perimeter who were closely watching the organized group, while others assured that the man pushed a Qatari police officer during a more lavish celebration. He was therefore charged with “inappropriate behavior” in the stands and arrested.

The situation caused some commotion in the stands, but it was not considered a serious incident and so the fan was released at the end of the match, according to DN. As in other situations, the supporter must now be classified as risk supporter (risk fan) and denied access to stadiums at least during the 2022 World Cup.

The joint police force of the PSP and GNR led by Superintendent Ribeiro of the PSP present in Qatar confirmed the incident to DN, without going into details, as it was not directly related to the case nor had access to the Portuguese citizen in question .
