The Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva asked this Saturday “forgiveness to all the Portuguese” for the elimination of the selection against Morocco, a team he described as “of great value”.
In the quick TV interview after Portugal’s 1-0 defeat, Bernardo Silva acknowledged that the players believed “you could really go further”.
“Unfortunately it was not possible, for that reason we apologize to all the Portuguese. We tried to do everything possible to represent our country in the best way and today we could not do it,” he lamented.
On the field, the midfielder says he felt “a difficult game, against a very aggressive and very competitive team”, as had already been seen in the Moroccans’ duel “against Spain”.
In the first half, Portugal was unable to “break their lines” and, in the second half, “also a bit desperate”, the Portuguese ended up giving their all.
“We did everything possible to qualify for the semifinals, but it was a difficult match for us. We are very sad because the objective was clear, it was to go to the semifinals, ”he acknowledged.
After a “painful” match, Bernardo Silva did not fail to point out that Morocco “will be in the semifinals because it deserves it and because it has a lot of merit”, in a tournament in which they also eliminated “Belgium and Spain”.
“It is a selection with a lot of value and the names do not matter,” he concluded.
A goal from Youssef En Nesyri, in the 42nd minute, sealed the victory for the Moroccans, who became the first African team to reach the semifinals of a World Cup, while Portugal failed to repeat the 1966 and 2006 semifinals.
In the semifinals, Morocco, which finished with 10, due to the expulsion of Cheddira, by 90+3, will face on Wednesday, at 10:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. in Lisbon), in Al Khor, the winner of the clash of today between England and France.
