Seismic movements recorded during Croatian celebrations against Brazil

Seismographs from the Department of Geophysics of the Faculty of Science in Zagreb recorded seismic movements caused by the festivities during the match against Brazil, which qualified Croatia for the semi-finals of the World Cup.

The information was released this Sunday by the faculty, which also published photos of its seismograms showing the movements on its page on the social network Facebook, explaining that the recorded undulations are not typical of “real earthquakes”.

According to information from the Department of Geophysics of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, the first movements recorded coincided with Bruno Petkovic tying the game (1-1), in the second half of extra time.

When goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic saved the first penalty kick and the Croats eventually won the game after Brazil’s Marquinhos’ missed penalty kick, movements were also registered.

Seismographs also say the most notable seismic disturbances were recorded in Zagreb and Rijeka, the two main cities in the Balkan country, where many supporters celebrated after the match.
