Sinisa Mihajlovic, former player and coach who had a brief stint at Sporting, has died

Former soccer player and coach Sinisa Mihajlovic died this Friday in a hospital in Rome. The former athlete was 53 years old and suffered from leukemia.

“In mourning, the family announces the unjust and premature death of her husband, father, son and exemplary brother, Sinisa Mihajlovic. A unique, extraordinary professional, available and good for everyone. She bravely fought a horrible disease. We thank the doctors and nurses who accompanied him over the years, with love and respect,” the family said.

In 2018, when Sporting was going through a turbulent moment, after the attack on the Alcochete youth academy, Bruno de Carvalho introduced Mihajlovic as the new coach of the lions. However, before the dismissal of the former Leonese president, the Steering Committee headed by Sousa Cintra decided to fire the coach, nine days after his presentation.

As a player, the Serbian was seen in Vojvodina and Estrela Vermelha, from where he jumped to Italy. There he stayed until the end of his career, where he played for AS Roma, Sampdoria, Lazio (where he crossed paths with Sérgio Conceição and Fernando Couto) and Inter Milan (where he played with Luís Figo).
