Manchester City closed this Thursday the batch of teams classified for the quarterfinals of the English League Cup at the expense of Liverpool, by beating the reigning champion 3-2 at home.
At the end of the fourth day, the duel between the two emblems with the most victories in the competition (nine for Liverpool and eight for Manchester City) ended with a victory for the ‘citizens’, with a goal by Fábio Carvalho for the ‘reds’.
The Portuguese midfielder started for the visiting team and scored in the 20th minute, nullifying the advantage given to Manchester City by Norwegian striker Haaland, in the 10th minute.
At the start of the second half, just after 47 minutes, the Algerian Mahrez put Pep Guardiola’s team ahead again, but Jurgen Klopp’s men responded practically on the next play, with the Egyptian Salah leaving everything tied once again.
With the second assist from the Belgian De Bruyne in the game (the midfielder had already been in Haaland’s play), the Dutchman Aké made the final 3-2, in the 58th minute, in a game in which Bernardo Silva was still thrown in the local team in the final moments.
Manchester City thus joined Wolverhampton, Newcastle, Leicester City, Southampton, Nottingham Forest, Manchester United and Charlton Athletic, the latter from the third division, in the quarterfinals of the English League Cup.
