More than 4,100 incidents registered in the past sports season, the majority in football

The National Sports Information Point (PNID) registered 4,135 incidents in the 2021/22 season, the majority in football and due to fireworks, damage, injuries and incitement to violence and racism, according to a report that Lusa had access to on Tuesday.

The sports violence analysis report (RAViD), drawn up by the National Information Point for Sport (PNID), located at the Public Security Police (PSP), and by the Authority for the Prevention and Combating of Violence in Sports (APCVD). reports 4,135 incidents last season, of which 3,815 in football and 320 in other sports, resulting in 843 identified suspects and 135 arrests.

The document, which collects information from the security forces and judicial and administrative authorities, states that “the increase in the number of recorded incidents compared to the 2019/2020 and 2020/21 sport seasons is notorious”, which were affected by the restrictions due to of the covid-19 pandemic, bringing the figures back closer to pre-pandemic, namely in the 2018/19 sports season, when 3,891 incidents were recorded.

The RAViD, referring to the period between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022, also states that of the 3,815 recorded incidents in the last football season, 38.7% are related to I Liga sporting events (1,477 recorded incidents), followed by Liga 3, with 17.2% (652), and Liga II, with 11.2% (427), while the Campeonato de Portugal and the European competitions featured 328 and 317 respectively.

The report, which analyzes the 1,477 recorded incidents in the First League, points out that more than half of the incidents (57.5%) are related to the possession or use of pyrotechnic devices (849), followed by damage (171) , incitement to violence , racism, xenophobia and bigotry (78), throwing objects (77), assaults (46), insults (43) and field invasions (17).

In the last sports season and in I Liga matches, the police made 26 arrests and identified 337 suspects, in addition to 64 offenses of “non-compliance with the duties of the prosecutor”.

Across all sports, the PNID was responsible for 1,251 violations related to “non-compliance with the duties of the promoter” of the sports show, “due to the intensification of the inspection activity of the security forces regarding non-compliance with the tasks” of the clubs.

As for the PSP, responsible for overseeing most professional football matches deemed high-risk, it mobilized 114,477 police officers in 22,132 sporting events of all modalities last season.

The PSP ensured the safety of more than two million supporters who visited the stadiums of 12 teams in the area under the authority’s responsibility, focusing on the 21 international matches.

Last season, the PSP arrested 130 people for non-compliance with rules governing sporting events, removed more than 120 people from stadiums and identified more than 800 suspects, including fireworks, incitement to violence, racism, xenophobia and invasion of sports venue the main events of this police.
