The number of fans banned from stadiums last season is the highest ever

The 335 fans denied access to sporting venues in 2021/22 correspond to “the highest ever figure in a single sporting season”, with almost half from Sporting, a report on violence related to sport (RAViD) revealed on Tuesday.

“During the 2021/22 season, the National Sports Information Point (PNID) has been informed that 335 access bans to sports venues have come into effect, an increase of 109.4% compared to the 2020/2020 season. 21 , in which 160 prohibitions have come into effect,” says RAViD, which agency Lusa had access to today.

The RAVId, produced by the PNID, stationed at the Public Security Police (PSP), and by the Authority for the Prevention and Combating of Violence in Sport (APCVD), highlights that it is “the highest number of prohibitions ever enacted” in one sport season in Portugal, reinforcing the growing trend to apply these measures”.

According to the document, of the 335 bans that came into effect last season, 274 were the result of a decision by the APCVD (81.8%) and the remaining 61 were determined by the courts (18.2%).

The document, which collects information from the security forces and judicial and administrative authorities, reports that the 335 bans that came into force in the 2021/22 sports season targeted supporters of five clubs (76.2%), namely Sporting (138) . , followed by Benfica (49), FC Porto (44), Sporting de Braga (13) and Vitória de Guimarães (13).

Most reasons for banning supporters from sports venues last season were related to possession or use of pyrotechnic devices (25), incitement to violence, racism, xenophobia (48) and aggression (17).

RAVId also indicates that between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022, 537 final sentencing decisions (which, once the appeal has been exhausted, have already entered into force) by the APCVD, of which 274 measures took effect last season.

According to the same document, the majority of supporters who are not allowed to enter stadiums and subject to prohibitions imposed by the APCVD are men, mainly living in the districts of Lisbon (37.6%), Porto (22.3%) and Braga (12%) .

In terms of age distribution, 29.9% of fans are between 16 and 20 years old, followed by 21 to 25 years old, at 29%.

The report also notes that 86.5% of fans are members of Organized Groups of Fans (GOA) and that 64.9% of additional sanctions for banning access to sporting venues that came into effect relate to periods between eight and twelve months.

Most of the situations relate to football (97.3%) and in particular to the I Liga competition, which accounts for 59.6% of the total suspensions applied in this modality.

The PSP, responsible for overseeing most high-risk professional football matches, last season monitored 300 supporters who were banned from sporting venues under a decision by judicial authorities and an additional sanction from the APCVD .

At the start of the current sports season, PSP monitored 244 fans who were denied access to sports venues.
