The organizers of the World Cup in Qatar, which Argentina won, announced on Tuesday that “80 percent of the waste generated in the stadiums has been recycled.”
“This is a great achievement achieved thanks to the detailed planning and unwavering commitment of the tournament organizers and national stakeholders,” the organizing committee’s head of sustainability, Bodour al Meer, said in a statement.
One of the main objectives of the sustainability strategy for this World Cup, which ended on December 18, was to “reduce waste and increase recycling, especially plastic.”
To achieve this, tournament organizers “successfully replaced plastic with compostable and reusable alternatives,” the note states.
One of the concerns of the 2022 World Cup was the sustainability of two venues at the Estádio Cidade da Educação, where Portugal lost to South Korea (2-1), known as O Diamante do Deserto, becoming the first Qatar certified with five stars.
