Alcaraz defeats Ruud in the final of the US Open and is the new number one in the world

The Spanish Carlos Alcaraz won the US Open this Sunday, his first ‘Grand Slam’, by beating Casper Ruud in the Norwegian final, and will climb from fourth to first place in the world tennis ranking.

At 19 years old, Alcaraz, who defeated Ruud, seventh in the hierarchy, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-1) and 6-3, in three hours and 23 minutes, will become the youngest world leader in history, surpassing the record held by Australian Lleyton Hewitt, who in 2000 reached the top at the age of 20 years and nine months.

The Murcian tennis player won his first major in his first final, adding his sixth title, after winning the Masters 1000 in Madrid and Miami and those in Barcelona and Rio de Janeiro, in 2022, and in Umag, last year, in seven finals, after being defeated in Umag and Hamburg, already this year.

In Flushing Meadows, Alcaraz beat Rudd, 23, who lost again in the final of a ‘major’ after the defeat at Roland Garros, in June, against the Spanish Rafael Nadal, in what was his 13th final, adding eight victories, in Gstaad and Geneva, in 2021 and 2022, in Buenos Aires, in 2020 and this year, having still others last year, in San Diego, Kitzbuhel and Bastad.
