The Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, current leader of the world tennis ranking, has announced this Friday that he has withdrawn from participating in the Australian Open, the first ‘Grand Slam’ of the season, due to injury.
“At a time when I was feeling in my best shape, I was injured by a false movement during training,” revealed the tennis player on his Twitter account, reporting a muscle injury in his right leg.
The player, who will also miss the Kooyong (Australia) tournament, expressed his sadness at missing the first major tournament of the season: “I worked hard to reach my best level in Australia.”
With 19 years, Alcaraz became the youngest player to reach the top of the world ranking, after the creation of the ATP classification in 1973, when he won the US Open last September, his first victory in a tournament of ‘ Grand Slam’, also becoming the youngest player in history to finish the year at the top of the world hierarchy.
