Roberto Martinez is appointed to succeed Fernando Santos. According to the newspaper The Telegraph the 49-year-old Spanish coach, who stopped as national coach of Belgium after the 2022 World Cup, is on the radar of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).
Despite never winning a major competition, he led the so-called golden generation of Belgian football. As leader of the Belgian national team, Martinez’s best result is the semi-finals of the 2028 World Cup, where he finished in third place. At Euro 2020, he remained in the quarter-finals after losing to winner Italy and at the 2022 World Cup, he remained in the group stage, eventually leaving the Belgian bench.
Since Scolari, Portugal has been betting on national selectors: Carlos Queiroz, Paulo Bento and Fernando Santos. Now, after Jose Mourinho’s “no”, Fernando Gomes will have looked at international options and Martinez is one of them.
