Cover with a good dose of controversy keeps Benfica unbeaten

Another twist and another triumph. This Friday, Benfica lost for the second time this season and in consecutive matches at Estádio da Luz, but won, this time against Vizela, 2-1. The winning goal was scored in the 101st minute of the game, by João Mário in the transformation of a controversial penalty. The ninth win of the season in nine games for Roger Schmidt’s side, in a game that ended with nine players on the field, after the expulsions of Gonçalo Ramos and João Mário (for taking his shirt off during the festivities), history will go on in. Both miss the ride to Famalicão in the sixth lap.

With the most recent reinforcements Julian Draxler and John Brooks alongside Rui Costa in the Estádio da Luz presidential grandstand, Benfica took the field with two changes to the eleven related to the encounter with Paços de Ferreira. Gilberto returned to the right side of the defense for a trade with Alexander Bah and the young António Silva replaced the injured Morato.

And it was not an easy start to the game for Benfica. Vizela defended with very clean lines, blocking paths and stealing space from the eagles’ creatives. In the 20th minute, the Vizelenses took advantage of a counter-attack, which the Reds were unable to cancel at birth, with Kiko Bondoso launching Osmajic at speed, who fired hard and defeated an ill-placed Vlachodimos.

The break came to the disadvantage of the eagles, largely due to the goalposts of Fabijan Buntic. When after ten minutes the iron prevented Goncalo Ramos from scoring, at 38″ he did not want Rafa to draw the match. Going to halftime and not scoring a goal was a novelty for a team that had scored at least until today two goals in the first part.

Roger Schmidt came back from halftime with the same eleven and so relied on early picks to score the equalizer. Rafa led the mission, but Buntic didn’t allow him to score. Benfica gained momentum, but Vizela didn’t get involved in the conversation and didn’t get disorganized, without losing a sense of purpose. Osmajic gave young António Silva a headache and had two chances in two minutes before getting injured and forcing Álvaro Pacheco to force another substitution in the team.

The game entered a hectic phase with several scoring opportunities. At 63″ another duel between Buntic-Gonçalos Ramos and a new advantage for the goalkeeper of Vizela. To keep the company with number 88 company, Schmidt made a structural change by leaving the two midfielders who were very starters – Florentino and Enzo – to Peter Musa and hand over the midfield to reinforcements, Fredrik Aursnes.

The equalizer came in the 76th minute at the feet of David Neres. A great goal from the Brazilian, who made the difference as soon as he woke up for the game. This was followed by an intense search for the comeback goal. Mission complicated by the expulsion of Gonçalo Ramos, who saw two yellow cards within minutes. A controversial decision by Fábio Veríssimo, who promises to brighten up the coffee discussions. As well as the penalty that gave Benfica the victory in the 101st minute and which gave the team 100% victory at the start of the season.
