Former PSG player and Olympic champion for Cameroon dies at age 40

Former Cameroonian footballer and Olympic champion Modeste M’Bami has died aged 40, his agent said on Saturday.

“I spoke to his girlfriend, who confirmed the news to me,” Franck Belhassen told AFP, adding that M’Bami died in the French city of Le Havre.

That reports the sports newspaper L’EquipeM’Bami died of a heart attack.

M’Bami was Olympic champion for Cameroon in Sydney in 2000 and made 38 appearances for the Indomitable Lions, including the 2003 Confederations Cup final and the African Cup of Nations final five years later.

Throughout his career, he represented Paris Saint-Germain, for which he won two French Cups, and Marseille.

“PSG has learned with deep sadness the passing today of our former player Modeste M’Bami. The club extends its sincere condolences to the family and loved ones,” PSG wrote on its Twitter account.

Marseille lamented the “sudden death”, while Le Havre expressed “enormous sadness”.

After a club career in France, Yaoundé-born M’Bami also played in Spain, China, Saudi Arabia and Colombia.

M’Bami returned to France and spent two seasons in Le Havre between 2014 and 2016.
