Shakhtar Donetsk donates 25 million euros to help the soldiers who defended Mariupol

Shakhtar Donetsk will donate 25 million euros to help the soldiers who defended the city of Mariupol, the president of the Ukrainian club announced on Monday, a day after the transfer of soccer player Mykhaylo Mudryk to Chelsea.

The project is called Heart of Azovstal and aims to help the soldiers who formed the last focus of resistance in Mariupol in these metallurgical facilities, in the war against Russia, as well as their families.

“The money will be used to cover various needs, in particular medical assistance, with an emphasis on the allocation of prostheses and psychological help,” explained Rinat Akmetov, who noted that the bravery of these Ukrainian soldiers “has no parallel in recent history.”

Without mentioning that the amount will be withdrawn from the value of Mudryk’s transfer to Chelsea, which could reach 100 million euros, the president of Shakhtar Donetsk linked the two operations, publishing a joint statement in which he also addresses the striker’s departure.

Akmetov expressed satisfaction and pride to see Mudryk heading to the English League, “the best league in the world”, but regretted not being able to keep one of the most promising Ukrainian players at the club, a situation made worse by the war.

“Unfortunately, that is now impossible as Ukraine is waging a horrendous and unfair war that the Russian Federation has launched against them. But I think we will win it and we will play a friendly against Chelsea in the Donbass Arena, in a Ukrainian Donetsk,” he said. .

Chelsea announced on Sunday that the 22-year-old Ukrainian international striker will represent the London club for the next eight and a half years after signing from Shakhtar Donetsk.

In statements reproduced by Chelsea, Mudryk speaks of a “very attractive project” for this stage of his career, after having only competed in Ukraine.

“I’m delighted to sign for Chelsea. This is a great club, in a fantastic league and it’s a very exciting project for me at this stage of my career. I’m excited to meet my new teammates and I’m looking forward to it.” work with them and learn from them. [o treinador] Graham Potter and his team,” he said.

At Chelsea, Mykhailo Mudryk, capped eight times with his country, will share a dressing room with Portuguese João Félix, on loan from Atlético Madrid until the end of the season.

This season, the young Ukrainian scored 10 goals and eight assists in 18 official matches for Shakhtar Donetsk.
