The Football Leaks trial decision will be known on April 28. Leaving the Justice Campus in Lisbon, Rui Pinto’s lawyer, Francisco Teixeira da Mota, revealed that there was recognition of the commission of some crimes.
“It’s not that huge, but there were. Bearing this in mind, it is more sensible to say that they were practiced and recognize that the legal system has to punish than to seek acquittal when you are acknowledging, at the same time, that there was the practice of illegalities”, explained Francisco Teixeira da Mota.
Rui Pinto’s defense also admitted that Rui Pinto “is sorry” and that the decision of the group of judges in the Football Leaks trial should imply a suspended prison sentence for the defendant, stressing that it will be “enough”.
“I wasn’t going to fight for acquittal, it wouldn’t make sense. A suspended prison sentence will be enough,” said lawyer Francisco Teixeira da Mota at the session held at Lisbon’s Central Criminal Court, highlighting Rui Pinto’s evolution over the years. over the last seven years and the circumstances of continuing under the witness protection regime: “His life is on hold. He is a person who, unequivocally, was motivated to report crimes ”.
At the end of his final arguments, the lawyer for the creator of the electronic platform only fully assumed the commission of three crimes of illegitimate access (Sporting, FPF and PLMJ) and four of improper access (Sporting, FPF, PLMJ and PGR).
The lawyer also argued about the context of Doyen’s extortion attempt, with knowledge of the negotiation, but highlighted the withdrawal in writing, which should result in an unproven fact: “He wrote that he did not want a penny.”
Rui Pinto, 34, is responsible for a total of 90 crimes: 68 for improper access, 14 for violation of correspondence, six for illegitimate access, directed at entities such as Sporting, Doyen, the PLMJ law firm, the Portuguese Federation de Fútbol (FPF) and the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), as well as for computer sabotage of Sporting’s SAD and for extortion, in the form of an attempt. This last crime concerns Doyen and was the one that also motivated the pronunciation of the lawyer Aníbal Pinto.
The creator of Football Leaks has been free since August 7, 2020, “due to his collaboration” with the Judicial Police (PJ) and his “critical sense”, but he is, for security reasons, included in witness protection in a undisclosed location. and under police protection.
