Dani Alves detained in Spain on suspicion of sexual assault

Footballer Dani Alves was arrested this morning in Barcelona, reports the Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia.

The Brazilian footballer, currently employed by Pumas, in Mexico, is suspected of assaulting a woman on December 30 in a nightclub.

Dani Alves voluntarily appeared at a Catalan police station to answer for the alleged assault and was arrested, a Catalan police source told AFP. The player was taken to court to make a statement.

The Spanish judiciary reported last week that it had launched an investigation against the Brazil international, following a complaint from a woman who accuses him of sexually assaulting her in December.

The higher court of Catalonia, without mentioning the footballer’s identity, subsequently indicated that “an investigation has been opened into the alleged crime of sexual assault, following a complaint by a woman against a footballer”.

A source close to the trial told AFP that the player was Dani Alves, and Catalan police said the complaint was filed on January 2.

According to the local press, the events took place on the night of December 30-31 at a club in Barcelona, but on January 5, the footballer told Spanish television channel Antena 3 that he had not attacked anyone and that he does not know the complainant.
