The Belarusian tennis player Victoria Azarenka, champion in 2012 and 2013, qualified on Tuesday for the semifinals of the Australian Open, beating the American Jessica Pegula, in two sets.
Azarenka, 33 years old and 24th in the world ranking, knocked out the North American, third in the hierarchy, 6-4, 6-1, in one hour and 37 minutes, returning to the semifinals in Melbourne 10 years later.
To reach the sixth final of a Grand Slam tournament -she has lost three finals at the US Open-, Azarenka will have to defend herself against the Kazakh Elena Rybakina, world number 25 and Wimbledon champion last year, who beat the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, 17th in the ranking, by 6-2 and 6-4.
