Pedro Porro leaves for Tottenham. The English club was in Alvalade this Tuesday to negotiate the payment of the 45 million euros demanded by Sporting, the value of the termination clause of the Spaniard’s contract. If he leaves for this amount, he will become the most expensive right back to leave the Portuguese league and one of the five most expensive ever in the world. (see tables)
The few minutes he played against Arouca on Tuesday, in the game that took Sporting to the League Cup final, were arguably the last with a lion on the fierce defender’s chest, which Lions fans have seen in the last two and a half seasons. . He joined Manchester City on loan in 2020/21 and helped the Lions win the Championship. It has 97 games and three trophies: one title and two League Cups.
The good performances weren’t enough for Pep Guardiola to save him for City, but they led Frederico Varandas to make a significant investment to keep him permanently in exchange for €8.5m. In June 2022, Porro signed a contract until 2025, at which point the release clause of 45 million euros was set, an amount that Sporting needs to get him to the top tracks and to make Rúben Amorim not look bad in the picture, after revealing that the management assured him that the full-back will only leave for the value of the clause.
If confirmed, the output value will be a record. Never has a Portuguese club traded a right-back for the money involved in the Pedro Porro deal. The biggest sale to date is that of Nélson Semedo, who left Benfica in 2019 to join Barcelona for 35.7 million euros. The other three biggest sales in the I Liga were at FC Porto, who sold Danilo to Real Madrid (31.5), Ricardo Pereira to Leicester (22) and Diogo Dalot to Manchester United (22).
The 23-year-old Spanish defender will also be in the starting line-up top-5 of the most expensive ever worldwide. Looking at right-backs alone, Porro will be fifth in terms of amount paid, surpassed only by Kyle Walker, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, João Cancelo and Achraf Hakimi. The Moroccan youngster moved from Inter Milan to PSG for a record €68 million, which saw him dethrone Portugal’s João Cancelo.
The deal also comes in the club’s top selling position and is only surpassed by the transfer of Bruno Fernandes, who left for Manchester United in January 2020 for 63 million euros (already with goals). Porro’s 45m could also match Matheus Nunes’ deal, who moved to the Premier League at the start of the season to play for Wolverhampton and will top João Mario’s departure to Inter Milan.
Porro will thus make history by tripling one of the most profitable companies in Portuguese football, in terms of cost-effectiveness. Manchester City is entitled to a 30% capital gain on the sale of the Spaniard’s pass and therefore receives ten million. Now, apart from the 8.5 million invested by the lions in the purchase and the loan paid to citizens for two seasons, Sporting will be able to benefit more than 22 million from the sale of a player, who is not only a historic financial asset it has also been a huge sporting asset.
