The organizers of the London Marathon, one of the most prestigious on the world circuit, announced this Wednesday the opening of a category for non-binary athletes, starting with the 2023 edition.
The announcement of the London Marathon comes a day after the Boston Marathon, also one of the world’s ‘top’, revealed that athletes will be able to compete without registering in the men’s and women’s categories.
A third hypothesis is left open in the act of registration, for which the participants are given the option between masculine, feminine and non-binary.
“We know that there are still many measures to implement, but this demonstrates our commitment to making London an event open to all,” explains Hugh Brasher, race director, in a statement.
Athletes entered in the elite category, subject to the strict rules of World Athletics, will not be eligible for the non-binary category.
The London Marathon is scheduled this year for October 2, but in 2023 it returns to April, which will happen for the first time in four years.
