The United States will host the 2024 edition of the Copa America, a competition that brings together 16 teams from the two football confederations representing the American continent. This edition would take place in Ecuador.
Conmebol will be represented by the 10 teams from South America, while Concacaf will qualify six teams from North, Central America and the Caribbean.
“Conmebol and Concacaf are united by historical and emotional ties. But above all, we are united by the passion, which is common throughout America, for football and sports. We are determined to renew and expand our joint initiatives and projects”said Paraguayan Alejandro Domínguez, president of CONMEBOL.
Argentina, world champion and winner of the last Copa America in 2021, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela will represent Conmebol.
Concacaf representatives are determined based on their positions in the 2023/2024 League of Nations.
Ecuador in November assumed it did not have “the right stadiums” to host an “increasingly larger and more demanding” competition.
The United States will thus host the event again, after having done so in 2016, in a trophy that has Argentina and Uruguay as major dominators, with 15 successes each.
Brazil won nine times, Paraguay, Chile and Peru twice, while Bolivia and Colombia triumphed once.
This event will serve as a test for the stadiums and preparation for the hosts of the 2026 World Cup, a competition that also has Canada and Mexico as co-hosts.
This strategic cooperation agreement between CONMEBOL and CONCACAF aims to strengthen and develop football in both regions.
In this sense, the creation of a women’s football league, the Gold Cup, also in the United States, but with 12 teams, was also announced.
Likewise, in 2024, a club competition will be born that unites the different regions of the continent, namely a ‘final four’ with two teams from each confederation.
