Amorim wants to win the League Cup to “not forget the taste of victory”

The Sporting coach is “sure” that the ‘lions’ will win the third consecutive Football League Cup in the final against FC Porto, but highlights the rival’s value.

Rúben Amorim does not expect any big surprises in the game against the ‘dragons’, stressing that “the two teams know each other well” and stressing that Sporting has to be “aggressive” to lift the first trophy of the season.

“It will be difficult to have surprises, but each game has its own story and it depends on how the teams adapt. The coaches have met many times, the players know each other, FC Porto has changed and so have we. There are two teams with different styles and each will try to be stronger. On our side we have to increase the intensity and aggressiveness. You cannot play against FC Porto de Conceição without being aggressive”, said Amorim, who singled out Taremi, Otávio and Pepe as the most important players for the national champions.

Regarding the importance of the match, Rúben Amorim did not hesitate and stated that the final is more important for Alvalade’s team.

“For us it is a more important trophy, because we have less titles, we left the Portuguese Cup and the Champions League, and because FC Porto won the Cup and the championship. It is more important for us, but the will is the same” . for both. We want to win and we need this title. We have a project that needs titles and I am confident that we are going to win it, ”he said.

Amorim stressed that it is important that Sporting does not forget the “taste of victory”.

“I know that winning doesn’t save anything, but it’s important because it’s good not to forget the taste of victory. It’s addictive and it’s good to feel that flavor”, assumed the coach, who also recalled that winning the League Cup is “important” due to the irregular season that the ‘lions’ have had.

Still, Amorim doesn’t want winning this trophy to be seen as a lifeline.

“The League Cup is not enough. We cannot have a speech and change when things are not going well. Winning a title is rare, as it was last year. I want the players to feel that. You have to win game after game”, concluded the coach.

Sporting, champion of the League Cup in 2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21 and 2021/22, will face FC Porto, runner-up in 2009/10, 2012/13, 2018/19 and 2019/20 , on Saturday, at 7:45 p.m., at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa, in Leiria, in the decisive match of the 16th edition of the competition, refereed by João Pinheiro, from the Braga association.
