Enzo Fernandez signs with Chelsea until 2031

Argentine footballer Enzo Fernández, taken over from Benfica for 121 million euros, has signed an eight-and-a-half-year contract with Chelsea, until 2031, the London club announced this Wednesday via its official website.

In the note issued, the blues saying the 22-year-old midfielder has “signed a contract until June 2031 and will wear shirt number ‘5’, which belonged to Jorginho, transferred to Arsenal on the last day of registration”.

Enzo Fernández was made official as Chelsea reinforcement shortly after midnight, with Benfica’s SAD informing the Securities Market Commission (CMVM) that the English paid 121 ME for signing the Argentina international.

In the same note to the market regulator, Benfica refers that Chelsea “will have the right to keep the 3.78% solidarity mechanism for later distribution to the clubs that participated in the player’s training”.

“In addition, Benfica SAD will deduct agency fees of 6.56% of the value of the sale from the solidarity amount and will also have to provide River Plate with brokerage services the amount corresponding to 25% of the transfer value deducted from the solidarity amounts” , is also stated in the statement.

After arriving at the Luz club in mid-July 2022, from River Plate, for 10 ME, to which he could add eight million per goal, the 22-year-old midfielder moved to the “blues”, for which they paid a million euros above the release clause, which was set at 120 ME.

Enzo’s transfer to Chelsea matches the highest sale by a Portuguese club, now ahead of João Félix, who moved from Benfica to Atlético de Madrid for 120 ME in 2019.

On the other hand, it is also the highest transaction in Premier League history, surpassing that of Jack Grealish, who was signed by Manchester City from Aston Villa in 2021 for 117 ME.

Enzo Fernández is considered the best young player of the 2022 World Cup, which he won with Argentina. He played 29 games for Benfica and scored four goals.

Prior to arriving at Luz, the midfielder was almost always linked to River Plate, with a pass on loan from Defensa y Justicia, also from Argentina.
