Tiago Pires is waiting for the phone to ring. Until March 9, surfers will be chosen for the 2023 edition of the Perfect Chapter, a competition that brings together some of the best surfers in the world, tube specialists, on Carcavelos beach. In the memory of the Portuguese surfer there are still some moments that this competition gave him, since in the first edition he ended up winning.
“In 2015 I had a very special championship, with very good waves, despite being very cold out of the water, something that is always a particular condition, the days in Carcavelos when the sea is big and good, are always cold days. The good days I had, in those big brown tubes from Carcavelos, ”he points out. “In Carcavelos we have a very welcoming beach, the tubes are closer to the sand, so they are easier to handle than in Nazaré or Supertubos.”
It is the tubes that receive Tiago Pires and other prominent surfers again. “New faces are coming. The world champion Adriano de Souza will participate. I’ve been talking to him, he’s very motivated and getting ready to come. Adrian Buchan also comes, a great surfer, who was on the world circuit. There are also specialists, such as the Hawaiian Torrey Meister. They are tough nuts to crack, but if we are synchronized with the waves on the day, anything can happen (…) but it is increasingly difficult to win”.
The waiting period is extended to March 9. Until then, surfers like Tiago Pires are waiting for perfect conditions to meet in Carcavelos for the race.
“The Perfect Chapter is a bit of an unusual race, but it turns out to be a surfer’s dream. Knowing that we are going to have a championship with good waves, something utopian when it comes to world circuits, because the organizations cannot guarantee a window to find the perfect conditions. What is required here are perfect conditions. This, for us surfers, is something that leaves us relaxed. We know that what we like to do the most is guaranteed”, explains the Portuguese surfer.
But what can a surfer do while waiting for the wave of his dreams? “There isn’t much to do other than prepare myself physically and technically and wait for the day to come”, says Tiago Pires. Until then, the surfer continues to imagine the brown waves, which roll along the beach of Carcavelos.
