The English Football League Cup final, pitting Manchester United against Newcastle, will have fans on their feet for the first time in 34 years, organizers announced Thursday.
Each club will be entitled to 900 seats behind the goals at Wembley Stadium, where the final will be played on February 26.
The presence of standing spectators in English stadiums was prohibited after the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, which caused 97 deaths, after a crowd of people at the start of a match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
Three years later, the measure was only applied in the two main English divisions.
In the second half of last season, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham all participated in a successful standing room experiment, as did Cardiff from a lower division.
Last July, the government announced that “clubs that comply with strict security measures” were allowed to install permanent stands in stadiums.
