Eight of the 13 Benfica fans arrested for violence in the cheerleading squad are in custody

Eight of the 13 Benfica fans who had been arrested in a PSP operation against violence in cheerleading squads were arrested. The other five were released, but are required to make daily appearances with authorities.

Bruno Carrêlo Mota, the lawyer representing some of these supporters, has already announced, in statements to journalists, his intention to appeal these measures.

“I keep thinking and I will put in my appeal that the evidence is manifestly insufficient for such a measure”, defended Bruno Carrêlo Mota.

Other lawyers also told reporters that they intend to appeal this ruling.

The coercive measures became known this Saturday, two days after 16 Sporting fans were released after being arrested in the same operation. The arrests occurred in the metropolitan area of Lisbon and the south bank of the Tagus last Thursday.

The detainees belong to the “casuals” movement, that is, they do not belong to the official cheerleading club. However, they are linked to violent crime and engage in aggressive behavior. PSP classifies these followers as the most active and aggressive elements of this movement.

In addition to the 29 arrest warrants in flagrante delicto, the Public Security Police said that “another individual was also arrested in flagrante delicto in possession of a prohibited weapon, in the case of a firearm.”

This detainee in flagrante delicto was released and the facts reported to the Sintra Court, a police source explained to Lusa.

In addition to the 30 arrests of individuals between the ages of 18 and 47, along with “two groups related to the casual movement” of lions and eagles, “various material related to this subculture” was seized.

Among the items seized are three firearms and more than 750 pieces of ammunition of various calibers, pyrotechnic material, from firecrackers to smoking pots and torches, bladed weapons and other craft instruments, “13 maritime signaling artifacts”, 5,840 doses of hashish and 1016 doses of heroin.
