It is the first time that the trophy has passed through all 32 countries that qualified for the World Cup. Gilberto Silva, world champion in 2002, is the one who carries the trophy. He is one of the few who has the right to touch the cup, as only former world champions and heads of state of countries can do so.
Gilberto Silva lifted the trophy 20 years ago for Brazil and now explains the sensations of touching that cup again, made of solid gold that weighs six kilograms: “a very special sensation. Different from anything you can imagine.” And what expectations does this former Brazilian international have in relation to the Canarian national team for this World Cup? “In Brazil, expectations are always very high, but many times we get frustrated. It has happened a few times. But the magic of football is that we can dream and have expectations,” says Gilberto Silva.
In Qatar there is the possibility that Brazil and Portugal will meet in the round of 16, a moment that would be nice, says the former Canarian international: “It would be wonderful, they are two great teams! I know how difficult it is to play against Portugal. Brazil is also difficult. If it happens, it will be a great game.”
The trophy remains in Portugal for a few hours, at the Figo Maduro military airport, and then continues its journey. In Lisbon there is a replica. The original trophy starts on another special flight to another country, which will also be represented in Qatar.
