The Portuguese Gustavo Ribeiro was crowned world skate runner-up this Sunday, in the final of the World Cup held in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, which was won by the French Aurélien Giraud.
The Portuguese Olympian, winner of the 2022 SLS Super Crown, achieved a score of 267.38 in the final decision of the strand street in Sharjah, which earned him second place behind Giraud (269.33).
In third place was the Japanese Ginwoo Onodera, only 12 years old, with 263.04, in a fight for the podium in which the Portuguese athlete achieved the highest individual ‘race’ of the competition, with 91.18 points.
Gustavo Ribeiro, 21, wins a new medal after having already conquered the world skate circuit, triumphing in the Street League Skateboarding Super Crown, in November 2022, in Rio de Janeiro.
“Finishing second and representing Portugal is a great achievement. I managed to improve my Olympic score [de apuramento para Paris2024]. (…) It was not the result that I expected and wanted, I always want first place. Now is the time to focus and work on the next one. I did a maneuver that had never been done before, I was the first to do it and I expected a slightly higher score”, declared the athlete, shortly after winning the silver.
According to the skater, the focus is already “on the next steps”, because this vice is “only the beginning” on the path to further achievements.
The athlete’s achievements were repeated by the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports, João Paulo Correia, who praised the “great result” and the “excellent indicators” achieved, highlighting the president of the Portuguese Skating Federation (FPP), Luís senic. the “very important achievement for national skateboarding”.
This World Championship, organized by World Skate, dates from 2022, since it was not held in Brazil as planned the previous year, and is the event with the highest ‘quota’ for the Olympic ranking with a view to Paris 2024.
In the modality’s debut at the Olympic Games, Gustavo Ribeiro was eighth, obtaining a diploma.
