Basketball player LeBron James, of the LA Lakers, became the leading scorer in North American League (NBA) history this Wednesday by surpassing 38,387 points, the previous record held by the legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Four-time champion, aged 38, LeBron achieved the feat by recording the necessary 36 points in the game between Los Angeles and Oklahoma City to reach 38,388 points in the regular season, excluding the playoffs.
Abdul-Jabbar—one of many celebrities and sports stars to frequent the arena where the game took place—had become the league’s all-time leading scorer on April 5, 1984, and finally retired from basketball in 1989, with 38,387 points.
Few came close to the record. Karl Malone was 1,459 points behind Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant 4,744 points and Michael Jordan 6,095 points.
LeBron James is in his 20th season in the NBA, matching Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the North American league.
