On Wednesday, Maria Martins was crowned European champion in scratchby winning gold at the European Track Cycling Championships, which take place in Grenchen, Switzerland.
The Portuguese cyclist beat Spain’s Eukene Larrarte, while Poland’s Daria Pikulik took bronze.
The 23-year-old Portuguese young woman added gold to the bronze medal she won in the same discipline at the 2020 Elite World Cup.
Meanwhile, Rui Oliveira was European runner-up in elimination for the second time in his career and won the runner-up medal for Portugal in the first round of the European Track Cycling Championships.
On the Grenchen velodrome, Oliveira saw the German Tim Torn Teutenberg overcome in the battle for gold. The Dutchman Philip Heijnen took bronze.
The silver was won by the 26-year-old Portuguese, who had already been crowned European runner-up in the elite category in 2018 and won bronze at the 2017 European Championship.
