Paulo Sousa is the new coach of Salernitana

Portuguese coach Paulo Sousa is Salernitana’s new coach, succeeding Davide Nicola, who was sacked in January, rejoined two days later and fired again on Wednesday.

The 52-year-old former midfielder is an old acquaintance of the Italian Serie A. He played for Juventus, Inter Milan and Parma in the nineties and led Fiorentina between 2015 and 2017.

After passing Florence, Paulo Sousa led Bordeaux (2019-20), the Polish national team (2021) and Flamengo (2022).

In mid-January, the club announced Nicola’s departure after a heavy defeat to Atalanta (8-2), but owner Danilo Iervolino eventually retained the coach, a key player to stay in Serie A last season.

Nicola’s second life lasted less than a month, as Salernitana, currently ranked 16th in the championship, was beaten Monday by Hellas Verona (18th) in a crucial endurance match.

After a good start to the season, the club from Salerno, south of Naples, retired in early November with just five points in the last ten rounds.

After announcing Nicola’s resignation, Salernitana reported having “reached an agreement with Paulo Sousa” to lead the team that will host Lazio in Sunday’s 23rd round match.

Also this Wednesday, another Serie A club, Spezia (17th), announced the resignation of coach Luca Gotti, without specifying the name of the successor.
