Mayorga’s lawyer has to pay Ronaldo more than 300 thousand euros

Kathryn Mayorga’s lawyer has been ordered to pay more than €300,000 in damages to Cristiano Ronaldo following the case in which the player was accused of rape, a trial that was eventually suspended last year.

The amount of the damages – $ 334,637 (about 312 thousand euros) – refers to the fees that the Al Nassr player had to pay to the team of lawyers to defend against the lawsuit, according to CNN International.

The former model accused the footballer of raping her in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2019, but Cristiano Ronaldo denied the allegations, saying the sexual relationship was consensual. The lawsuit was filed in June last year.

It is recalled that the federal judge of the state of Nevada supported Cristiano Ronaldo’s lawyers and asked for the filing of Kathryn Mayorga’s complaint. In a recommendation to the judge hearing the case, Magistrate Daniel Albregts blamed Leslie Mark Stovall, Mayorga’s attorney, for improperly basing the civil damages suit on stolen confidential documents proving communications between Ronaldo and his lawyers.

“Dismissing Mayorga’s case because of his attorney’s misconduct is a difficult consequence,” the magistrate said in his 23-page report to Judge Jennifer Dorsey at the time.

The same judge has now ordered Stovall to pay more than €300,000 to the Portuguese player for misusing stolen confidential documents and for acting “in bad faith” in Mayorga’s defence.

According to CNN, the amount of compensation stipulated is lower than what is being demanded by Ronaldo’s representatives. The judge found that the Portuguese player and his lawyers dragged on the case longer than necessary, adds the North American television channel.

The case dates back to 2009, the year in which Kathryn Mayorga signed a non-disclosure agreement with Cristiano Ronaldo, in which the American promised to remain silent about an alleged rape by the player that same year in a Las Vegas hotel. In return, he would have received about 322 thousand euros.

The deal was revealed in 2018 by German newspaper Der Spiegel based on documents obtained by the Football Leaks website. Mayorga later filed a civil lawsuit in court, seeking damages of around $64 million for the “pain and suffering” he claimed to have suffered.
