Diogo Ribeiro wins gold medal in junior swimming world

Portuguese Diogo Ribeiro won a gold medal this Thursday at the World Junior Swimming Championships in Lima, Peru, by winning the 100m Mariposa final.

The Portuguese swimmer took first place with 52.03 seconds, ahead of Czech Daniel Gracik (52.51) and Dane Gasper Puggard (52.94).

“I am very happy with this gold medal. It is the result of the hard work I have done. At the moment I just have to dedicate this medal to my family and everyone who has supported me, my technical team, my coach, my club and federation,” he said.

The young Portuguese swimmer, 17, managed to push himself “in a very tough test” as he classified the final of the 100m Mariposa immediately after leaving the water, ahead of “big opponents”.

Diogo Ribeiro, who is still entered for the 50 and 100m freestyle and the 50 and 200m Mariposa, returned this Thursday to an outstanding performance in the World Cup qualifying session as he managed to set the best time of all registered for the 50 meter freestyle.

The Portuguese swimmer qualified for the semifinals with a time of 22.23 seconds, ahead of Croatian Jere Hribar (22.42) and Brazilian Matheus Pereira (22.62).

The young swimmer, who shone in the absolute European Championship in Rome, winning a bronze medal, will compete in the semi-finals of the 50-meter freestyle on Saturday at 12:12 am (Lisbon time).

The swimmer, trained by Alberto Silva, has been able to compete every day until Sunday, with the ‘goal’ to win medals.
