Christian Atsu was honored today for FC Porto-Rio Ave. The Ghanaian player, who played for both teams, is believed to have passed away today after the earthquake that hit Turkey on February 6 and also hit Syria.
According to the player’s manager and the club he has represented since September, Hatayspor, the player was found lifeless in the rubble of the building where he lived, in Hatay, southern Turkey.
Before the opening whistle of the 21st matchday of the I Liga, the players gathered in the center of the field, displaying the jerseys of the two clubs, the only one Atsu represented in Portugal, with the name and number worn by the African striker. FC Porto captain Pepe wore a Rio Ave jersey with the Ghanaian’s name and number 20, which the striker wore during his time at Vila do Conde, in the 2011-12 season, while Guga, captain of the Vila do Conde team condense, showed a white shirt with the number 27, which Atsu wore at FC Porto, in 2010-11 and 2012-13.
The emotional initiative earned a big round of applause from the supporters present in Estádio do Dragão.
Atsu has been playing for Hatayspor in Turkey since September. The winger also played for Vitesse (Netherlands), Everton, Bournemouth (both from England), Malaga (Spain), Newcastle (England) and Al Raed (Saudi Arabia). Newcastle, where he played in 2017, also remembered him for today’s game against Liverpool, which the Reds won, in the presence of the woman, who lives in London.
