Four Schalke 04 fans were seriously injured after attacks committed by elements allegedly linked to rival football clubs, German police said in a statement on Sunday.
According to a note from German authorities, the attack took place around 5 a.m., when several Schalke supporters had gathered in Gelsenkirchen to travel by bus to Berlin, where the Pitmen face Union today, to the German League.
German police say about 100 people, “probably” linked to the radical cheerleading groups of Rot-Weiss Essen and Borussia Dormund, attacked hundreds of Schalke fans, including with baseball bats, and “at least four people were seriously injured”.
The injured were later taken to hospital and stabilised.
In a statement, Schalke said they “condemn all forms of violence” and “wish a speedy recovery to those who have been injured”.
