The 22-year-old, who took part in the Dutch Championships in Apeldoorn, beat Czech Jarmila Kratochvilova by 49.59 seconds, achieved in March 1982.
Bol, world champion and Olympic medalist in the 400m hurdles, also set the rarely-disputed world record in the 300m hurdles in Ostrava last year, with a time of 36.86 seconds.
“It’s thanks to all the fans here that I broke this record,” Bol said after his race in the Omnisport arena on Sunday. “I’ve never seen so many people here. When I crossed the line, I knew the record was mine because of the noise the crowd was making.”

Bol had cut 50 seconds for the first time last weekend in Metz, on the 400m indoor track, with 49.96, but this Sunday he took seven-tenths of a second from that point.
The Dutch athlete, as is typical for her, had a strong start and completed the 200 meters in 23.63 seconds and crossed the finish line in 49.26, followed by Lieke Klaver, who came second with 50.34.
Bol gave an indication of her impressive form two weeks ago when she clocked the fastest women’s indoor 500 meters ever with a time of 1:05.63 during the Boston Indoor Grand Prix.
In doing so, she became the first woman to break the 1:06 minute barrier in the distance (which is not part of the major championships), breaking the previous world record of 1:06.31 set by Russia’s Olesya Krasnomovets-Forsheva in January. from 2006.
Femke Bol won European titles last year in the 400m hurdles, 400m smooth and 4x400m relay.
He also won silver in the 400m hurdles at the World Championships in Eugene, which followed bronze at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics in the same event.
