The president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) on Wednesday congratulated the women’s team that guaranteed its presence at the World Cup, expressed conviction that “an advanced, modern and fair nation should give equal opportunities to men and women”.
“I know that the path we have taken in the more than 10 years of the current directorship has been to create those same conditions of equality,” Fernando Gomas said in a message from the FPF, adding: “It is work that is by its very nature never finished, but done in a coherent, resilient and participatory way”.
Fernando Gomes believed that today’s goal of being present in a final phase of the World Cup, “will be the beginning of an even more ambitious path for Portuguese football and for all girls and women who want to play top-level football in Portugal .”.
“I can say without any doubt that all future generations will always have as a reference the group that today honored not only the entire FPF, but all football and national sports, as well as the country itself,” he said.
“A dream of more than three decades”
The federation leader thanked the efforts of all players and the technical team led by Francisco Neto, considering that the commitment and dedication of all “concreted a dream spanning over three decades and placed Portugal in the one final stage it had yet to play in its 108-year history”.
The Portugal women’s football team qualified for the 2023 World Cup today by beating Cameroon 2-1 in the Group A final of the intercontinental play-off, in New Zealand’s Hamilton.
At the World Cup, which will take place in Australia and New Zealand between July 20 and August 20, Francisco Neto’s men will join the Netherlands, Vietnam and the trophy holders United States in Group E.
